Yeah yeah yeah, I know I know, every “guru” around the block is telling you how their platform or their method or way of doing something was “game changing” and how you should do it too…but hear me out, k?
In 2016 I published my first YouTube video – a tutorial on how to make an interactive Gmail signature. My face wasn’t even in the video, there was no plan for what to do with it and I just plopped it up on YouTube and left it.
But that ONE video changed so much in my business.
I helped solve a problem that people had and that INSTANTLY made them see me as an authority or as someone who could solve more problems for them. People in my circles started referring to it as “the Jessica Stansberry method”. HOW WEIRD IS THAT, right?
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a plan and I didn’t even see YouTube as the tool that I had used to make this happen – I viewed it as a holding ground for that tutorial, that’s all.
Something funny happened not long after “The Jessica Stansberry method” gained some popularity: I went to a conference, my first business conference actually, as an attendee (not a speaker!) and because of that video, because of people starting to see me as an “expert”, I was being asked why I wasn’t speaking or people were assuming that I WAS speaking. It was kind of crazy.
Here’s something you need to know about marketing:
People HAVE to move through a process of KNOWING, LIKING + TRUSTING you before they’ll buy from you. AKA: They have to see you as an expert or a guru or whatever word you want to use.
What are some ways you can help them do that?
BY SOLVING A PROBLEM THEY HAVE!
That’s all I had done. That’s it, solved a problem that I didn’t even really know people had.
Then, I kept doing it.
After I realized the PLATFORM was just as important as the problem solving (more on that in a minute), I kept publishing problem-solving videos on my YouTube channel starting at once a week, moving to 3/week for several months and then back to once a week.
THIS LITERALLY CHANGED MY BUSINESS.
With every single video, more and more people were not only discovering me but were seeing me as an expert. They’d learn to trust me, get on my email list, learn from me some more and then they’d buy my products and services.
EVERY time I would release a video, new people would find it as a solution to their problem.
See, this is where so many people go wrong in their business. They make it all about them, all about how awesome they are at what they do but, really, the POWER in marketing comes from solving problems for people with no strings attached.
So, since that day in 2016, I’ve grown from 0 to over 40,000 YouTube subscribers, increased my website traffic from non-existent to over 65,000 hits per month, grown my email list from 500 to over 15,000 highly-engaged subscribers and grown my income to the point where I can say I’m a “multiple 6-figure” business which is insanely crazy.
100% honesty here – it could NOT have happened with another platform.
Yes, I could have went viral on Instagram or gotten featured in Forbes or had a blog post go viral but the GROWTH, the actual growing part of the business could not have happened in the way it did without YouTube.
Because of the SEO power.
SEO = search engine optimization and MOST people are going to think of Google when they think of SEO but YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world (only 2nd to Google) AND it has this little power that not a lot of people know about.
See, YouTube itself is a powerhouse, it’s a place where 30 million people PER DAY go to search for things they need help with and/or watch their favorite creators. BUT, it’s also owned by Google.
That’s right, the #1 search engine in the world OWNS YouTube, so in addition to being a powerhouse by itself, it’s also a tool to help you rank higher in the #1 search engine, Google.
Apple Podcasts can’t do that.
Pinterest can’t do that.
Instagram can’t do that.
Facebook can’t do that.
YouTube can help you:
- Solve Problems
- Be found in search on YouTube
- Have your blog posts rank higher in Google
- Get in front of the exact right people
- Be seen as more of an expert
NONE of the other platforms can do that the same way YouTube can.
That’s how YouTube changed my business. It gave me a place where I can harbor my expertise, where my ideal clients can search for what they need help with and find ME, where my blog posts can get a little extra something-something from Google because they have an accompanying YouTube video.
It’s not a secret.
I didn’t do anything that you can’t do. I didn’t have some kind of HUGE audience before that I drove over to YouTube to make this all happen, actually, that’s the beauty of it; I did NOT have a huge audience before. IT WAS THE TOOL THAT GREW MY AUDIENCE.
